Jonathan Wheby
Hello, my name is Jonathan Wheby and I am a Massage Therapist with fifteen years experience. I am fully insured and actively registered with the State of Colorado DORA. My specialties are Thai Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Hot Stone Massage, and Chair Massage. My studies include a Double Major in French and Studio Art from the University of Colorado at Boulder and massage certificates from Wat Po Temple in Bangkok, Thailand, and Old Chang Mai Hospital, International Training Massage I.T.M., Lek Chaiya’s Nerve Touch Massage School, and Lanna Thai Massage School in Chang Mai, Thailand. My travels have taken me to Thailand three times to study Thai Massage and Scuba Diving, to France, where I studied for a year in college, to Ghana, West Africa, where I spent two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer teaching Art and living in a small village with no electricity or running water and a third year living in a city operating a Peace Corps Sub-Office, and to more than 20 other countries around the world along the way. My travels and experiences all helped create the philosophies that are represented in my bodywork.
My specialty is Thai Massage Therapy at Rhythmic Touch. It is performed clothed on a mat on the floor and does not use oil. I describe Thai Massage as assisted yoga blended with Deep Tissue Massage. I stretch and manipulate my clients in ways that one cannot possibly do alone by using my hands, forearms, elbows, knees, and feet. My style comes from teachings from five of the most internationally renowned schools in Thailand mixed with my own form of Deep Tissue. Thai Massage dates back 2500 continuous years and pertains very much in modern Thai culture. Although it can be used to address injury, it is mainly thought of as preventative maintenance. The philosophy being that if any disruption to the flow of energy is removed then the body is able to exist in a state of health. The stretching and manipulation together offer a sports-oriented treatment, though I can adjust to almost any body and level of flexibility. Many athletes and yogis utilize Thai Massage as part of their regimen to remain flexible and agile and to prevent injury. It is not recommended for those with current injuries, especially joint, or women who are pregnant.
My Deep Tissue Massage at Rhythmic Touch is performed on a massage table under a sheet and blanket. I search out physical issues in the soft tissue and use techniques with my hands, forearms, and elbows to alleviate the issues, which assists the body in returning to a state of balance and health. My intentions are to offer a relaxing and comfortable experience while influencing positive physical change. When I discover a knot or area of stress in the soft tissue I address it directly while treating the body as a whole inter-connected system. I adjust the pressure and techniques of each session according to the client and their wants and needs. I coach my clients to breathe and meditate to allow me to work deeper and with more intensity to influence as much positive physical change as possible.
Due to my participation in such activities as mountain biking, telemarking, skate skiing, running, swimming, weight lifting, Yoga, Pilates, and volleyball, I have firsthand knowledge of what it takes to be an athlete and the benefits and tolls to the body. I choose to live in the Steamboat area because of all the options to practice the activities I enjoy. I practice bodywork with Rhythmic Touch Sports Massage Therapy in Steamboat Springs because what I do seems to assist active people with their active lifestyles.
