Steamboat Springs Neuromuscular Massage Therapy

Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is an intense massage modality that consists of focused, concentrated massage on one specific area of the body at a time.  This includes the treatment of trigger points. The American Academy of Pain Management recognizes this form of massage as an effective treatment for pain caused by soft tissue injury, such as a muscle strain.

Trigger points are painful points located within taut bands of muscle that sometimes refer or transfer pain to another area of the muscle.  They are treated primarily with the application of sustained, usually static pressure for 10 to 30 seconds on an area. Alternating levels of pressure are applied with hands, elbows, or a small tool called a T-bar, depending on the stage of development of the trigger point.

Neuromuscular therapy may feel painful at first, but the pressure of the massage should alleviate the muscle spasm.  In fact, most people describe the pressure as “good pain”, or the pain you feel after a hard work out.  This soreness will dissipate over a few days as would the soreness from any new exercise.  To assist in eliminating soreness following a Neuromuscular Therapy Massage, take a hot Epsom Salt bath the evening after your session for 15 to 20 minutes followed by gentle stretching.  Also, be sure to keep your body well hydrated, by drinking adequate water for your body weight, the day before, of and after your massage.

Through the softening of trigger points, blood flow is once again restored to the muscle. NMT aims to reduce chronic pain, increase range of motion and flexibility, increase energy, relieve headaches and correct postural distortions.

NMT is often integrated into other therapeutic treatments to help you reach your pain relief goals.
